Someone will put out a free game, then use lulu or rpgnow to host you need to sign up just to download it and check it out.

Personally, when it happens, I just move onto a game that'll let me look at it. It's a bigger factor than it should be when I'm evaluating retro clones.

Anybody else feel the same way?

I have accounts with both and often use their search functions to find new games I'm interested in.

Not having an OBS or Lulu account limits you to a tiny portion of the OSR (which may be plenty for some people). Most publishers with PDFs on OBS can't host them elsewhere because they have an exclusivity clause (like me). You don't have to agree to exclusivity, but if you don't OBS takes a much bigger cut. And Lulu is still the premier route to printed OSR books.
